Communicate 4.1.1 Evaluation Methods and Communication Practices Quest

Involving the students in their learning goals and providing feedback that leads to students identifying their next steps is and important part of communication that will improve learning.  Unfortunately the most common type of feedback is simply the outcome feedback, which shows whether a question is correct or incorrect.  Seldom does this type of feedback provide an explanation as to why it is incorrect.  We need to communicate this information to to student, along with guidance for using appropriate strategies.  This type of feedback will create deeper understanding for the student so they might apply the content to authentic situations.  Using Performance based learning is a great way to assess as learning is happening and the situations are authentic, giving the student the opportunity to improve all manner of problem solving skills.  When we give them authentic feedback, we are showing them how to use actual work and  issues to replicate real-world performances.  Some really good examples for authentic evaluations come in the form of concept maps and simulations.  Feedback and second chances work well within these types of environments so students learn as they work.
